Events in Castiglione delle Stiviere – Lake Garda

Castiglione delle Stiviere stands on the morainic hills of the Mantua area, birthplace of San Luigi Gonzaga, whose Baroque basilica dominates the main square. It's also where the idea of the Red Cross was born: here Henry Dunant saw local women tending the wounded after the 1859 Battle of Solferino, an experience that led him to found the organisation.

The International Red Cross Museum tells that story; the town is also known as the "city of fountains" for the many historic fountains scattered through its centre.
