Events in Solferino – Lake Garda
Solferino, in the hills of the Mantua area, is tied to the battle of 24 June 1859, one of the decisive clashes of Italian unification, which involved more than 234,000 soldiers. It was the horror of that battle, witnessed by Henry Dunant, that inspired the founding of the Red Cross.
The Rocca, a tower dating from around the year 1000 known as the "Spia d'Italia", the 1870 ossuary and the Risorgimento Museum tell that story; since 2018 the town has held the Touring Club's Orange Flag for tourism and environmental quality.
